Such Dark Things
by Courtney Evan Tate
“My body folds back
into the seat, and I finger the medical bracelet circling my right wrist.
Corrine Elizabeth Cabot, Female. It’s me, condensed into one stark sentence,
yet I'm a stranger to myself right now. That’s why I’m here. I don’t know
myself or my thoughts. My memories are foreign, blocked, nightmarish, out of
control.”
Courtney. Evan. Tate.
!! It has been a long time since I picked up a thriller that sucked me in like Such Dark Things. I couldn’t put this
book down, and I stayed up late into the night once or twice telling myself
*just one more chapter* over and over again.
Corrine is a
character that you can never quite wrap your head around, but she is absolutely
enthralling. She’s this bad ass doctor with a husband that adores her, and—besides
a few small quarrels—her life is picture perfect.
Or so she thought.
Corrinne works hard,
but she loves her job so in her eyes the hard work is worth it. Her husband,
though, tells her she’s working too hard, and he misses having her home with
him. Corrine wants to make him happy, but her repressed memories are
threatening to tear her apart as the Halloween season approaches. The panic
attacks are more frequent, she swears she’s seeing things that others say aren't
there, and she’s starting to wonder if her husband is hiding something from
her.
All bets are off when
Corrine ends up in a psychiatric hospital following a suicide attempt that she
swears she didn’t commit.
“You're saying that I
tried to hurt myself. But I wouldn’t do that.
I look at him now,
and he's so fucking emotionless. I look down at my left wrist, at the bandage
covering up the stitches.
I wouldn’t,” I insist
again. “I’m a fucking physician. I wouldn’t have cut my wrist horizontally. If I
really wanted to hurt myself, I would’ve known to cut myself along the vein.”
Again, Corrine is a
bad ass doctor. Even in this place that makes her feel small and weak, she’s
this huge presence that knows something is amiss. Unfortunately, she just can't remember.
This novel will take
you down roads you didn’t even see coming. Courtney built this incredible world
full of so many secrets, and there’s no way anyone will be able to set this
book down without wondering what’s going to happen next.
It will literally haunt you while you try to get anything done.
I swear to God if
this wasn’t an ebook I probably would have accidentally ripped pages out,
thrown the book across the room, or spit my wine out all over the pages. This
book—and the author—are whip smart.
And she wrote some
hella good sex scenes, just sayin’.
This book will be
going on the shelf next to the likes of Gillian Flynn, exactly where it belongs.
